Mac battery not charging (or "Service Recommended")
What you see: the Mac runs on battery (or won't start) with the charger connected, or System Settings shows battery status "Service Recommended." Apple's definition: "your battery's ability to hold charge is less than when it was new, or it isn't functioning normally" — explicitly not a safety issue. Charging failures split into hardware (adapter/cable/port), battery age, or a power-management stall.
The fast answer
Try Apple's own odd-but-documented trick first: shut down the Mac, close the lid for 30 seconds, open it, and charge again. It resets the charging negotiation, and it fixes a surprising share of "plugged in but not charging" cases on its own.
Step 1 — Read Battery Health
- Apple menu > System Settings > Battery, then click Battery.
- Read the health line:
- Normal — battery is fine; keep troubleshooting below.
- Service Recommended — the battery is aged or misbehaving. Apple says you can keep using the Mac safely; service when the runtime bothers you.
Step 2 — Check the power chain
- Use a correct-wattage, Apple-certified adapter and cable — underpowered third-party chargers are the classic "charges slowly or not at all" cause.
- Try a different wall outlet, and a different port (USB-C or MagSafe, whichever your Mac has).
- Look into the port for debris — pocket lint inside the port stops USB-C cables seating fully.
Step 3 — The 30-second lid reset
Shut down fully (Apple menu > Shut Down), close the lid, wait 30 seconds, open the lid and plug in again. Watch the battery icon in the menu bar — the charging bolt should appear.
Step 4 — Update macOS
Keep macOS current (System Settings > General > Software Update). Charging quirks right after an OS update are a recurring pattern in Apple's community threads, and the follow-up patch usually fixes them.
Step 5 — SMC reset: only if you have an Intel Mac
The internet's favorite answer, with a catch: Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later) have no SMC reset — plug into power and Apple menu > Restart is the whole procedure. Intel MacBooks:
- T2-security-chip MacBooks: shut down; hold the power button 10 seconds; release and start normally. If unresolved: hold left Control + left Option + right Shift for 7 seconds, keep holding and add the power button for 7 more, then release and start.
- Older MacBooks (no T2): shut down; hold left Shift + left Control + left Option + power for 10 seconds; release and start.
Step 6 — Apple Diagnostics
Still nothing: run Apple Diagnostics (Apple menu > Restart, then hold the power button on Apple Silicon, or press D at startup on Intel) — a battery or power-controller failure code means it's a service visit, not a settings fix.
You'll know it worked when
The menu-bar battery icon shows the charging bolt and the percentage climbs over the next 10 minutes.
Still broken?
Take it to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Batteries below 80% capacity covered by warranty or AppleCare are replaced free — check coverage before paying anything.
Certified chargers, sorted
Most "Mac won't charge" cases trace to an underpowered cable. A correct-wattage certified charger costs less than one Apple Store visit.
